			<title><![CDATA[Cleanly restart wicd so it reconnects]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=747&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Dear all:

I seem to be having "disconnects" from my wireless network where I stay connected but am unable to ping any hosts,
including my router.

I would like to make a simple cron script that checks for this and reconnects.

Is there a clean way to tell wicd to reconnect?

How about sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart?

I am on Ubuntu 8.04 amd64

misha@misha-d630:~$ dpkg -l | grep wicd
ii wicd 1.6.2.2-1 wired and wireless network manager
misha@misha-d630:~$

Any help appreciated

Thank you!

			<description><![CDATA[I've just installed wicd 1.6.2.2 on a fresh install of openSUSE11.2. I've removed all Networkmanager files.

I previously used 1.6.1.1 on openSUSE11.1 without any real problems so am surprised that I'm experiencing so much trouble now.

Problem 1
When I try to connect to my wireless router, wicd is not connecting for some reason. Below is the output in the log.

[quote]2009/12/24 12:31:01 :: Setting hidden essidS#######R

Clicking refresh doesn't list any of the available access points or networks.

It's impossible to scan for new networks.

Problem 2
If the wireless network fails to connect and I then try plugging in the ethernet cable wicd doesn't automatically recognise the ethernet and try connect using the eth0 device. I have to manually right click the tray icon and then it scans and finds the wired connection.

I'd appreciate any help on this.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[I'm not sure if this is related to my other wireless problems posted earlier, but once I have an established wireless connection and if I open the wicd network connection manager (by clicking on the wicd tray icon) my wireless connection drops immediately.

I didn't experience this behaviour with 1.6.1.1. Is this something new introduced in 1.6.2.2 or is mine not behaving correctly?]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[Reconnection with wicd now requiring a reboot]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=742&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Hi,

this is probably an issue with changes in the network stack in Karmic Koala rather than wicd as such but I will post here in case someone else has experienced this and has found a workaround.

In the office where I use my laptop it is not uncommon to get disconnected from the wireless network. Using wicd on Jaunty, I could just reconnect after a short break. Sometimes I would manually kill wicd-client and restart the wicd daemon if a simply reconnect wasn't working.

Under Karmic something has changed. When I get disconnected now, I just can't get back online unless I reboot my laptop. Even killing wicd-client and the daemon and restarting them doesn't fix it.

I am using the lastest wicd deb package available (1.6.2). Anyone have any thoughts on this?]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[WICD needs root password - FIXED]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=744&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Using  openSuse 11.2 KDE 4.3.4.

I am having a small problem in that on system start WICD requires root password to start, without the root password, the system tray applet has a little 'no' circle in it. I added the user (me) to the haldaemon group, rebooted and got automagically connected without the root password popup, but, there was no system tray applet. Then the root password request popped up and, having entered it, the applet appeared. So, as to a full solution, I have no idea.

Apart from that little glitch, wicd is working fine, as always.]]></description>

My guess is that wicd is calling dhclient with standard user rights and not with a prepended "sudo". What can I do?]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Hi.

I have a problem with wicd, this time with version 1.6.2.2 that runs on gentoo linux with kernel 2.6.31.3 from kernel.org. I have a laptop with an Intel 4965 AGN and the iwl-wifi firmware version 2 (228.61.2.24 exactly). Few monts ago I was using wicd 1.5.9-r1 with kernel 2.6.26 and firmware version 1 and I didn't get any errors. When I upgraded the kernel version and the firmware to version 2 but with wicd 1.5.9-r1 I got some errors connecting to my hidden network, I was unable to connect to my network sometimes. Thinking in an issue with wicd 1.5.9 and the firmware version 2 I upgraded to the wicd 1.6.2.2.

The first problem was with my network with a hidden SSID. I thought this could be the problem and with the router's panel I unhide the SSID and the problem was solved most of time but when I work on my laptop with battery I get the same error like when I worked with the hidden SSID.

If I try to connect to the wireless network using my laptop with the battery I get this error: [b]Unable to connect to <SSID name>[/b], or [b]Unable to obtain IP address[/b]; but my config on wicd is with a static IP address, after the error all the SSID detected by wicd dissapear, after that I push the button refresh few times and the SSID dosen't appear and if I run [b]iwlist wlan0 scan[/b] I get this error: [b]wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Device or resource busy[/b]. When I work with the AC I don't get the error "most of time".

This is wicd's log (with debug mode enable and dhcp):

This message was when I got the error trying to connect.

What is the problem? Can it be the firmware or kernel? Can it be Wicd? anyting else?

Thanks for reading.

			<title><![CDATA[Problems with a hidden network]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=653&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Hello

I am having some problems to get my dell notebook running kubuntu 9.04 with wicd connected to my d-link dsl 2640T. There are some other wireless networks available in the region and all are seen by wicd.

Wicd only shows a <hidden> network which I suppose it is mine ( the notebook is 30cm away from the router). I have tried to use the "find hidden network" but only thing it does is to remove all wireless networks.

Authentication and ip seem to be the problem.

Here is the content of a configuration file.

sudo more /var/lib/wicd/configurations/001b113f3b7e
ap_scan=1
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
       ssid="<hidden>"
       scan_ssid=0
       proto=WPA RSN
       key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
       pairwise=CCMP TKIP
       group=CCMP TKIP
       psk="a7286e257e9c7d7ef255400be241fcad501e20e02556c8a1149d37386fcf2dd2"
}

The notebook won't connect no matter what I try.

Wicd doesn't give me an option to enter the right essid. How can I do that?

How should I enter the passphrase? hexa or ascii?

Many thanks

			<title><![CDATA[AP association detection and gateway ping]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=640&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Hi folks!

I've used Wicd since 1.5.9 and it where working right with my wifi card: Intel 4965AGN.

Now, I'm using latest Wicd (1.6.2) with an external usb wifi device: Ralink 3070 (driver rt3070sta), with latest "staging" drivers from 2.6.30.3 vanilla kernel.

With this last device, I was unable to establish a fixed-ip connection. This is because Wicd falsely detect association with AP, and without wait Wicd try to ping default gateway (in its verify_association() - from networking.py) when the association isn't actually done yet - result: the Wicd can't ping and fails in associating with AP.

Note that my gateway allows ping (in opposition of this [url]https://bugs.launchpad.net/Wicd/+bug/399798[/url] bug).

The problems are:

1) Root of the problem: Wicd falsely detect AP association, and go to next step immediately trying to ping gateway, when it's not actually associated in that time

1.1) trigger of the problem: using USB Ralink 3070 device (driver rt3070sta), with static connection.

Detecting AP association with rt3070sta is tricky. Investigating the differences between the two wifi devices, I've found:

(include just relevant parts of output of 'iwconfig' - one of the Wicd external backend programs)
1.1.1) Driver RT3070STA
	TEST STEP 1:
	[ === system boot, driver freshly loaded === ]
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"" ("Access Point" string don't appear in iwconfig output!)

	TEST STEP 2:
	$ ifconfig ra0 up
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 3:
	$ iwconfig ra0 essid -- "AP_ESSID"
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated
	(after some time:)
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
	(in this step, the card is actually associated)

	TEST STEP 4:
	$ ifconfig ra0 down
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"" (...) Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

	TEST STEP 5:
	$ ifconfig ra0 up
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
	(2 seconds)
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 6:
	$ ifconfig ra0 down
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 7:
	$ iwconfig wlan0 essid off
	or
	$ iwconfig wlan0 essid ""
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"11n-AP"    (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated
	(can't clear the 11n-AP string)

Notes:
* ESSID "11n-AP" is a string that comes from this strange driver configuration file: "/etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat".
* There is no AP with ESSID="11n-AP" in my test.
* The driver report itself as RT2870, this is wrong. My card (and name of the driver) is RT3070. There is a separate driver “rt2870sta“ that cares about RT2870 cards (and correctly don't detect and drive my usb device)

1.1.2) Driver IWLAGN
	TEST STEP 1:
	[ === system boot, driver freshly loaded === ]
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"" (...) Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 2:
	$ ifconfig wlan0 up
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"" (...) Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 3:
	$ iwconfig wlan0 essid -- "AP_ESSID"
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated
	(after some time)
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
	(in this step, the card is actually associated)

	TEST STEP 4:
	$ ifconfig wlan0 down
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 5:
	$ ifconfig wlan0 up
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated
	(dont try to associate with AP again)

	TEST STEP 6:
	$ ifconfig wlan0 down
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"AP_ESSID"  (...)   Access Point: Not-Associated

	TEST STEP 7:
	$ iwconfig wlan0 essid off
	or
	$ iwconfig wlan0 essid ""
	iwconfig out: ESSID:"" (...) Access Point: Not-Associated
	(this clear the ESSID)

2) Other problem that don't affect me: Wicd try to ping gateway: some gateways drop ping (bug 399798)

In my case, pinging gateway prematurely returns error because AP association is in course (caused by root problem 1). One remedy is retry some times, waiting 1 second each try. With the following patch I can connect:

My patch for file “./wicd-1.6.2/wicd/networking.py”:

[code]
458c458,464
<             retcode = self.iface.VerifyAPAssociation(self.network['gateway'])
---
>           for tries in range(1,11):
>               print "Verifying AP association: ping gateway: try " + str(tries) + " of 10"
>               retcode = self.iface.VerifyAPAssociation(self.network['gateway'])
>               if retcode==0:
>                   break
>               time.sleep(1)
>
461c467
< print "Connection Failed: Failed to ping the access point!"
---
>                 print "Connection Failed: Failed to ping the access point! (retcode = " + str(retcode) + ")"
[/code]

3) This bug [url]https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/397079[/url] may be related with bad drivers that maintain the previous ESSID string even when associating with a new AP (see test step 3 of rt3070sta driver).

Hope that this help.

Thanks to all developers of Wicd for this great and useful software, especially in arid linux distributions like Slackware.

			<description><![CDATA[My goal is to have firefox start after every successful connection wicd establishes.

Although I do connect successfully to the network shown above, the script that I have specified to run, /root/scripts/ff does not run.

Is there another way I can run a command/receive notification when a connection has been established?

I'm running Crunchbang linux (Ubuntu-based) with GNOME+OpenBox on an eeePC 901, wicd version 1.5.6 (I have updated apt-get and that is what it claims is the latest version - maybe I should try 1.6.x?)

			<title><![CDATA[WICD DBUS Interface specification]]></title>
			<link>http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=660&amp;action=new</link>
			<description><![CDATA[Hello, is the DBUS interface specification available for the WICD daemon? I can explore the interfaces (org.wicd.daemon, org.wicd.daemon.wireless, etc.) but I need to develop a sort of stripped down client that can run on an embedded system. I've got DBUS running, and the WICD daemon, but I am using a lot of guesswork (and looking at existing WICD client code, for KDE for example) in order to figure out what the various methods and signals do.

Is there a definitive reference to these interfaces available?
